Since the sexual education paved its way, the female orgasm is no longer a taboo. Moreover, it is now an issue of serious research. We have collected for you the top facts about the mysterious female orgasm.
1. Orgasm is the peak of female pleasure, which involves the whole body
The pelvic floor muscles, vagina, anal sphincter and reproductive organs contract rhythmically and spontaneously about once a second. Thanks to these contractions, blood is drained from the erect clitoris and vulva, returning them to their usual softness. Heart rate and blood pressure increase, breathing speeds up, blood rushes to the face and neck, causing redness.
Oxytocin levels, which have been increasing with sexual arousal, reach their highest level. Serotonin and prolactin are also released. Areas of the brain associated with emotions, integration of sensory information and emotions, higher level thinking and movements responsible for pelvic floor muscles are activated. Men and women also release the “happy hormone” dopamine. By the way, in men everything is much simpler.
2. Women need more time to reach the peak than men
In general, women need 10 to 20 minutes to experience orgasm. Men – only 2-8 minutes. An orgasm in women lasts about 20-35 seconds. During this period of time, we feel incredible pleasure with the whole body, and sometimes even an altered state of consciousness. In addition, 70% of women have experienced multiple orgasms at least once in their lives. This is when after the first orgasm you feel a new one with an interval of only a second. One study also suggests that the probability of having such an orgasm increases when sex lasts more than 15 minutes.
3. It is good for women’s health
And not only for women’s health! Some large studies have shown that both men and women who orgasm often live longer than those who do not. But there is a nuance. For us, it is not the quantity, but the quality of orgasm that is important. Yes, emotions, physical pleasure, joy after – if this bingo is collected, you will live longer.
Orgasm helps with insomnia. You need less time to fall asleep, and your sleep is stronger.
Thanks to the oxytocin that fills the body after orgasm, anxiety and the risk of ovarian cancer are reduced. And along with the fact that sex is a good physical activity, the risk of cardiovascular disease is also go down.
And one more thing. Last year, in 2021, German and British researchers received the Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine (this is a type of award for achievements that are first laughed at and then thought about). The award was given for the fact that orgasm can eliminate nasal congestion as good as an anti-inflammatory agent. Suddenly it will come in handy.
4. Women have several types of orgasm
Oh yes, there are many ways to reach the peak of pleasure. Choose to your taste.
Clitoral: 60% of female orgasms are due to clitoral stimulation. You can do it yourself, or you can involve your beloved man. If your clitoris is located close to the vagina, it will be stimulated by the penis during sex automatically.
Vaginal: there is an opinion that in fact such an orgasm is achieved due to indirect stimulation of the clitoris. However, everything is individual – women get orgasm from vaginal sex without regard to the scientists’ opinion. This is due to the sensuality of the vagina, stimulation of the G-spot and your general arousal. The more your partner arouses you, the more likely you are to orgasm.
Anal: the sphincter has a huge number of nerve endings, the stimulation of which can lead to orgasm. Not all women enjoy penetration, however, caressing in this area brings pleasure to 40% of women. More than 67% of them at first did not consider this type of sex pleasant, and then began to enjoy it.
Nipple stimulation: activates the same areas of the brain that are activated during genital stimulation, as well as induces the release of oxytocin.
Orgasm from fantasies/images: another proof that female orgasm begins in the brain. Studies confirm that erotic fantasies activate primary and secondary sensory cortex, sensory-motor integration areas, limbic structures and components of the “reward system”. Simply put, you can come just from thinking about sex.
This is certainly not a complete list. Certain women can also experience orgasm from cervical stimulation. In addition, the types can be combined, together leading you to ecstasy.
4. There may be no orgasm
The bad news is that 5-10% of women do not experience orgasm. The good news is that this is not a sentence, but mostly a consequence of conditions that you can influence. Depression, stress, health problems, certain medications, and even social and cultural biases and shyness can affect your pleasure. Science knows one thing: if you are a healthy, self-confident and happy woman, if you love and trust your partner, have sex when you really want it – you will not have anorgasmia.
And finally, debunking the myth
For some time, it was believed that orgasm plays a role in fertilization. They say that the contractions of the vagina and uterus during orgasm help the sperm to meet the egg faster. Now scientists agree that this may have played a role in the past, but now orgasm is just a nice (okay, very pleasant) bonus.
