The corpus luteum – what is it and how it affects your hormones

Every month, our body creates a new gland – the corpus luteum. Learn about the function of this organ and what a cyst of the corpus luteum is.

The corpus luteum is a factory for the production of the hormone progesterone, which appears at the site of the egg released. If a woman chronically fails to ovulate, then the corpus luteum does not appear in her body. As a result, there is a risk of chronic progesterone deficiency.

The corpus luteum is formed from the follicle from which the egg is released. It begins to produce progesterone, thus preparing for pregnancy. In this, the second phase of the cycle, libido decreases, because sex drive is primarily a tool of our reproductive system.

Corpus luteum cyst

Sometimes the size of the corpus luteum reaches 2 inches, which is called a cyst of the corpus luteum. It manifests itself with the following symptoms:

  • Nausea;
  • Painful menstruation;
  • Painful intercourse;
  • Breast hardening;
  • Aching pain in the thighs;
  • A few new pounds in the second phase of the cycle;
  • Aching and/or pulling pain in the lower abdomen;
  • Feeling of bloating and fullness in the abdomen.

ESSENTIAL!
Corpus luteum cysts do not require surgical treatment!

They are not to remove and resolve by themselves within 1-3 menstrual cycles.

The corpus luteum is a small endocrine gland. It appears every cycle, works for 10–14 days and then disappears.

On how well this factory works, the following things depend:

  • Female fertility;
  • Relaxation and tranquility;
  • The absence of PMS;
  • Heaviness and pain during your periods.

A decrease in the functioning of the corpus luteum – luteal phase insufficiency

Studies confirm that the absence of this gland, namely during IVF, almost doubles the likelihood of bleeding or miscarriage in the first trimester.

Proper functioning of the corpus luteum is ensured by normal levels of thyroid hormones. A decrease in its function and a surge in stress hormones lead to the development of luteal phase insufficiency and, as a result, to the above symptoms!

And if you have them, consult a doctor and take care of yourself in time.

To all 💗 and remember: if you have gained knowledge, pass it on to a friend. Know the basics of your hormonal health, share it with your daughter, friend, colleague! This saves you from the circles of hell called “going from a doctor to doctor over and over”.

Seek help from Lior Medical Center if you feel any symptoms, or better even before, for routine examinations. This is the best way to identify the problem at an early stage and prevent complications.
