How Fermented Foods During Pregnancy Influence Infant Development

A recent study reveals how consuming fermented foods during pregnancy impacts the neurodevelopment of children.

Fermented foods are known to regulate gut microbiota and are effective in preventing various diseases, including diabetes, allergies, depression, obesity, and digestive issues. Researchers from Toyama University and Japan’s Environmental and Children’s Research Group sought to investigate the effects of maternal consumption of fermented products during pregnancy on the health of their children after birth. Their findings were published in the esteemed scientific journal PLoS ONE.

Fermented Foods and Health: What We Know

Fermented foods such as yogurt, cheese, pickled vegetables, and legumes are renowned for their benefits to gut health, which in turn affects overall well-being. The process of fermentation has been used by humanity for centuries as a method of preserving food during prolonged cold or hot seasons. For instance, northern cultures maintained a supply of vegetables throughout winter. In the same time southern communities preserved milk during summer, when it would otherwise spoil within hours.

Modern research has long been studying the impact of fermented foods on human health. Their effectiveness in preventing various health disorders is multifaceted and has been supported by numerous scientific studies.

The digestive tract is teeming with some 100 trillion bacteria and other microorganisms. Research today is revealing the importance of a diverse and healthy intestinal microbiome (the microbial community in the gut) because it plays a role in fine-tuning the immune system and wards off damaging inflammation inside the body, which may lead to conditions ranging from obesity and diabetes to neurodegenerative diseases.

In addition to extending shelf life, fermentation enhances the nutritional composition of foods. For instance, vegetarians can obtain vitamin B12—absent in plant-based foods—by consuming fermented vegetables, explains Dr. Ludwig.

But that’s not all.

Fermented Foods and Gut Microbiota

One of the greatest benefits of fermented foods is their probiotic content. Modern diets, which often include ultra-processed foods, significantly reduce the presence of beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome. Changes in gut microbial populations can create an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria, leading to health issues.

Fermented foods are easier to digest and improve nutrient bioavailability. Fermentation breaks down lactose in milk and removes phytic acid from legumes, facilitating the absorption of essential minerals and vitamins. Increasing in the population of beneficial bacteria in the gut enhancing their ability to produce B vitamins and vitamin K.

Global data underscores the importance of fermented foods. In countries like Japan and South Korea, where fermented foods are widely consumed, lower rates of gastrointestinal and mental health disorders are often reported.

This evidence led Japanese researchers to hypothesize that fermented foods may also enhance children’s neurodevelopment by improving the maternal gut microbiota during pregnancy.

Summary of the Study

Researchers analyzed data from 60,910 mother-child pairs. They were the participants in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS), a large-scale project examining environmental impacts on child health. Mothers reported their consumption of fermented foods during pregnancy, and their children’s developmental milestones at three years old were assessed using the standardized Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3). This tool evaluates key domains such as communication, motor skills, and social abilities.

The analysis accounted for various factors, including maternal age, diet, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status. The findings were clear: higher consumption of cheese and yogurt during pregnancy significantly reduced the risk of developmental delays in children. For example, mothers who consumed at least 1.3 grams of cheese daily were less likely to have children with communication or motor skill issues.

The study highlights the impact of maternal diet on a child’s future. Incorporating fermented dairy products into a daily pregnancy diet can enhance maternal gut health and support a child’s neurodevelopment.
