World Thyroid Day – Top Facts

World Thyroid Day was observed for the first time in 2007 by the members of the Thyroid Federation International.

World Thyroid Day seeks to emphasize the pressing necessity of educational and preventive initiatives, while also raising awareness about innovative treatment approaches.

Why World Thyroid Day Was Established

The global healthcare community marks a significant event on May 25th every year. Thyroid disorders stand as some of the most prevalent endocrine conditions worldwide, trailing only behind diabetes. Approximately one out of ten individuals worldwide will experience some form of thyroid disorder during their lives. Notably, this condition affects women more commonly than men. Excessive hormone production by the thyroid gland is termed hyperactivity, while insufficient function is known as hypothyroidism. Both imbalances can give rise to a range of distressing symptoms.

To delve into the intricacies of the paramount female hormone regulator, the thyroid gland, immerse yourself in the webinar of Natalia Silina, the visionary founder of the Women’s Health School. I’m eager to offer these courses in English. Please send a request to dr.silinaeducation@gmail.com.

Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism arises when the thyroid gland falls short in generating an adequate supply of thyroid hormones. Its manifestations encompass weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, and hair loss, among others.

On the other hand, hyperthyroidism stems from an overactive thyroid gland, producing an excess of thyroid hormones. This condition brings about a range of shared symptoms, including weight loss, heightened appetite, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, irritability, and intolerance to heat.

Other Facts About the Thyroid Gland

  • Hypothyroidism tends to be more prevalent among the elderly, while hyperthyroidism predominantly affects the younger population;
  • Disorders of the thyroid gland can profoundly influence metabolic processes, energy levels, body weight, cardiac function, fertility, mood, and cognitive abilities;
  • Alarmingly, over half of those affected by thyroid disorders remain unaware of their condition;
  • Pregnant women with undiagnosed thyroid problems face an elevated risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and developmental issues in their offspring;
  • Untimely or inadequate treatment of thyroid disorders can even lead to heart diseases, osteoporosis, and infertility.

How to Celebrate World Thyroid Day

  • Make sure to undergo a thorough examination if you experience any symptoms. Encourage your friends or close ones to undergo testing as well;
  • Stay attuned to your body, and take note of any unexplained weight fluctuations, changes in energy levels, or shifts in mood. Don’t dismiss these signs casually;
