Gone are the days of exclaiming, “Oh, these promiscuous youngsters,” as it no longer aligns with the truth. Recent studies conducted by American scientists have shed light on a surprising revelation. Today’s young individuals are significantly less sexually active than even their parents were when they were at the same age.

Youngsters Have Changed

The behavior of today’s young adults diverges from that of their parents in several ways. They consume alcohol less frequently, grapple with more mental health challenges, and tend to live with their parents for extended periods. Additionally, the advent of computer games and social media has emerged as a substitute of sorts for physical relationships.

Even before the complexities and risks brought about by COVID-19, the number of young individuals abstaining from sexual activity had been steadily increasing. In 2011, approximately 22% of California residents aged 18 to 30 reported not having had a sexual partner in the past 12 months. By 2019, this figure had risen to 29%. And the most recent survey data from the University of California, Los Angeles indicates that it surged to 38% in 2021.

Why Are Young People Abstaining From Sex?

Young adults may be putting off long-term relationships due to their increasingly economically precarious status or stress related to completing education and looking for jobs. They are busy with other domains of life.

Researchers have also observed a significant number of youngsters identifying themselves as asexual.

The surge in computer usage may contribute to this trend. Professor Lei suggests that young people are increasingly establishing connections through video games with individuals they never physically meet. These virtual relationships can sometimes impede the formation of sexual relationships.

Moreover, the accessibility of limitless free pornography has reshaped perceptions of sex. Often featuring elements of coercion and violence, such content can distort one’s understanding of healthy sexual dynamics.

Economic factors also come into play: there is a correlation between lower income levels and decreased sexual frequency.

Men Have Less Sex Than Women

The aforementioned factors have a more pronounced effect on the prevalence of sexual activity among men compared to women.

For instance, according to a 2015 report by the Pew Research Center, an equal number of men and women engage in video gaming. However, it is young adult men who are over three times more likely than their female counterparts to identify themselves as dedicated “gamers.”

Additionally, economic influences have a greater impact on men. Many recent discussions surrounding the lack of sexual activity among young individuals have centered around the concept of “incels” – an abbreviation for “involuntarily celibate.” These men often express their frustration, sometimes employing derogatory and misogynistic language, and attribute their loneliness to women. They argue that women tend to prefer conventionally attractive and high-status men. And dating apps like Tinder make it easier for women to pursue these individuals, leaving other men ignored.
