September 26 – World Contraception Day

Every year, Contraception Day is dedicated to spreading information about available and quality methods, especially among young people.

Since 2007, ten international and national organizations associated with family planning issues have initiated World Contraception Day. The mission of the day is to increase awareness about all available contraception methods so that individuals can make informed choices regarding their sexual and reproductive health.

About Contraception Day

According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), 257 million women who wish to avoid pregnancy do not use modern contraceptive methods. Back in 1994, during the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, delegates from 179 governments affirmed the ICPD Programme of Action. It recognizes reproductive health and rights, including voluntary family planning, as the cornerstone of development.

Healthy families are created by choice, not by chance.

Dr. Nafis Sadik, former UNFPA executive director

A woman’s right to choose the number, timing, and spacing of her children is fundamental. That’s why the theme for this year’s day in 2023 is “The Power of Options.” Access to various contraception methods ensures that individuals can select what suits them best. Awareness empowers individuals to make choices that align with their own lifestyles, health status, and prospects.

The Importance of Contraception Awareness

Contraception significantly reduces maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as mortality and illness among newborns and children. It also helps prevent unwanted pregnancies and abortions. Barrier methods substantially reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Girls and women who can plan their families have more opportunities to realize their potential. They can pursue education, work, and make independent decisions about when to have children. This contributes to the development of more successful, stable, and equitable societies.

Why Women Decline Contraception

There are several reasons why women may choose not to use contraception:

  • Concerns About Side Effects: Some women worry about the potential side effects of contraceptive methods, such as hormonal changes or weight gain.
  • Misconceptions About Long-Term Effects on Fertility: for example, the belief that using contraception can hinder future pregnancies.
  • Partner or Family Opposition: In certain cases, a woman’s partner or family members may oppose or forbid the use of contraception, making it challenging for her to make her own choices.
  • Lack of Knowledge: Many women may not be aware of the various contraceptive options available to them, or may not have access to information about contraception.
  • Limited Access: Access to contraception can be limited in some regions, making it difficult to obtain and use contraception.
  • Financial Barriers: Cost can be a barrier to accessing contraception for some women who believe they cannot afford the associated expenses.
