Gynecological Disorders and the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases

Do not ignore gynecological disorders, even if they do not cause discomfort. Reproductive health issues can impact the entire body.

Heart problems—time for a gynecologist? It is quite possible, based on a recent study by a team of scientists from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. A new meta-analysis of data, published in the Heart journal, highlights how gynecological disorders affect the likelihood of developing serious cardiovascular diseases.

Common Gynecological Disorders

Non-cancerous gynecological conditions, such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and heavy or irregular menstruation, affect millions of women worldwide. This category also includes uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, chronic pelvic pain, and primary dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cramps). These conditions not only worsen daily life but can also have long-term consequences for a woman’s overall health.

Previous studies have suggested a link between these gynecological disorders and cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases. For example, PCOS, associated with metabolic issues like insulin resistance, is recognized as a risk factor for heart disease. Similarly, endometriosis: recent research has shown that this condition may also contribute to an increased risk.

Meta-Analysis: Gynecological Disorders and Cardiovascular Diseases

The scientists analyzed data from 28 studies involving over 3 million women, published before April 2024. These studies focused on common gynecological conditions: endometriosis, PCOS, heavy menstruation, and irregular cycles. The analysis revealed that women with at least one of these conditions had a significantly higher risk (28%) of developing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases compared to those without gynecological issues.

In particular, women with gynecological disorders had a 41% higher risk of ischemic heart disease and a 33% higher risk of cerebrovascular diseases. Endometriosis and PCOS emerged as especially significant risk factors.

Risk Factors and Biological Pathways

Experts suggest that the link between gynecological and cardiovascular diseases may be related to several biological factors. Systemic inflammation, commonly observed in endometriosis, and increased estrogen production could be potential contributors. Additionally, conditions like PCOS are often accompanied by metabolic syndrome, typically characterized by obesity and insulin resistance, which are known risk factors for heart disease.

Why Raising Awareness Is Important

Although the study demonstrates a strong correlation between gynecological disorders and cardiovascular diseases, the exact causal relationship has not been established. However, scientists believe that there is more than enough reason to raise awareness about the potential risks.

Awareness of this association would allow healthcare professionals to advise patients regarding risk-reducing behavioural changes and interventions, to potentially prevent or delay the onset of, or reduce the severity of [cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease].

Specifically, healthcare providers can offer advice on lifestyle changes. Eliminating harmful habits, increasing physical activity, and maintaining a healthy diet can reduce the severity of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, or even prevent them.

Since a significant portion of women suffer from gynecological disorders, understanding the broader health implications is crucial. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), polycystic ovary syndrome affects approximately 6-13% of women of reproductive age worldwide. Endometriosis is estimated to affect around 10% of women. Further research will lead to better recommendations and prevention strategies for treating these conditions and their complications.
